TO THE CAPTAIN
Being a team captain is more than putting your name in the right spot on the application. There are certain responsibilities that come with the title. This booklet is designed to explain those responsibilities and make your job as captain as easy as possible. Taking the time to read this booklet will keep you and your team out of trouble and make the season an enjoyable one for everyone Although this booklet outlines the basics for captains, keep this in mind THIS BOOKLET IS NOT A SUBSTITUTE FOR THE SNDA BYLAWS OR THE RULES FOR LEAGUE PLAY!

Your first job as a captain, after reading this booklet, is to become familiar with the Rules for League Play. Each captain should understand that the requirements that the SNDA has established are there for a reason. You may not always agree with the rules, but until they are changed, the rule of thumb is

1. The rules apply to everyone.
2. Play by the rules or pay the price.

SNDA rules are not hard to follow. Most of the things you are required to do are explained on the forms in the captain’s folder. Any questions can be answered by contacting your league rep or another Board member. The Board members’ phone numbers are listed on a flyer in each captain’s folder. Let’s move on to the explanations.

CAPTAIN’S DUTIES

Signing Up Your Team
Paying Fees
Attending Captain’s Meetings
Maintaining Weekly Records
Keep Your Team Informed
Keep the Board Informed

Please notice that all of the above are Captains’ duties, not anyone else’s. If you depend on someone else to perform these duties, you’re still responsible if they aren’t accomplished. It’s a good idea to have someone on your team familiar with these duties in case you are unavailable.

1)  Signing Up Your Team

Submitting a complete and accurate application for league play is a Captain’s first responsibility.
All the information requested is important If you want your team in the right division on the right night of play, the division section must be completed. Addresses/email addresses for all players are necessary for mailing of statistics, newsletters, notices, etc.. Phone numbers are needed in case of schedule changes, forfeits, postponements, rescheduling of matches, etc. We now require that we have phone numbers for all team members, and that all team members have each others' phone numbers. This is due to problems that have occured in setting up reschedules. If the captain or co-captain is not available, someone needs to be reachable.

2)  Paying Fees

The toughest assignment you have is collecting the fees from your team or sponsor and turning them into the SNDA Treasurer. Membership dues, league fees and sponsor fees must be submitted by specific times. If not, your team and/or team members will not be allowed to play league darts for that season. The following is a list of the various fees and dues for leagues:

SPONSOR FEES  are paid by the sponsor bar. This fee is $35.00 per team per season. Although this fee is to be paid by the sponsor, it is still up to the captain to ensure the fee is paid by the deadline.

PLAYER FEES  are paid by each member of a team. This fee is $15.00 per player per division for each season. Even if you have a sponsor who may agree to pay these fees for you, it is still the captain’s responsibility to ensure that all fees are collected and turned into the SNDA Treasurer by the deadline. If the fees are not paid, regardless of who said they would pay them, it will be your team or teammates who can’t play until they are paid.

SNDA MEMBERSHIP FEES  are paid by all players in leagues or anyone who is a member of the SNDA. This fee is $15.00 and covers the period from 1 January to 31 December. Any player used as a substitute, after playing for 3 nights (not necessarily for the same team) is required to pay the $15.00 players fee. If you have someone sub for you 3 times during a season they become a permanent player on your team and can not sub for anyone else in your division. Please make them aware of this before the 3rd match.

3)   CAPTAIN’S MEETINGS

Although attending meetings may seem like a nuisance, they offer the important opportunity to exchange information and ideas this exchange is vital to the growth and success of the SNDA These are the types of meetings directly related to captains.

DIVISION CAPTAIN’S MEETINGS

There is a scheduled captain’s meeting at the beginning of each season. This meeting is where alt the information about the current season is exchanged. Captains’ folders are also distributed at this meeting, so you attendance is mandatory. Captains’ folders contain schedules; score sheets, league rules, a listing of Board members, important phone numbers and other vital information. This is also the time for you input to the Board and other captains about upcoming events and any changes for league you would like to take place. If you can not attend, PLEASE arrange for another member of the team to represent you.

SPECIAL CAPTAINS’ MEETINGS

Either the Board or the team captains can call these meetings. The meeting can be called for specific division captains or for all team captains. Although the SNDA has yet to find it necessary to call a special captain’s meeting, it is your assurance that you always have the ability to address important issues.

OTHER SNDA MEETINGS

There is a General Membership Meeting held on the first Friday of November each year for the purpose of electing Board members. This is an extremely important meeting and all captains should attend and encourage their team to do the same.

The Board normally holds a meeting on a monthly basis. Attendance by non-board members is by Presidential invitation only.

4)   MAINTAINING WEEKLY RECORDS

This is the foundation of a captain’s job. It’s your responsibility to fill out the team’s records correctly and double-check them with the opposing team captain. The forms are self-explanatory or have simple instructions, so they can easily be completed.

SCORE SHEETS

This is a weekly record of your matches, listing who played on each team, the results of the games and the final score of the match On the sheet is a record of individual accomplishments such as 180’s, high on/high off, Ton’s or above, rounds of nines, low dart games etc.
This is the official record of the match and if the Board needs to review the night’s play, the sheet must have more than just the first names or nicknames make sure the sheet is legible, and includes FULL names.

The most common mistakes that cause problems for your team are made when you don’t follow the proper order of who can play in what games or you don’t follow the directions if one team has less than the required number of players. This is when the Rules for League Play are important, so you can check for proper procedures.

Score sheets must be submitted on line or faxed in to the Statastician by the Friday following the scheduled match. If you have a reschedule, inform the statistician by fax, email, or phone. This will keep the individual statistics up to date, and available for your next match. If scoresheets are not recieved within 7 days of scheduled date, the match will be deemed forfeited or rescheduled. Discrepencies will be dealt with by the board. It is captains’s responsibility to make sure their sheets are submitted before the deadline. BOTH captains are required to submit their scoresheets. If faxed, PLEASE,  indicate in some way which team the score sheet is from.

5)   KEEP YOUR TEAM INFORMED

Along with the information received at meetings, you will receive standings and other SNDA material. Read all the messages on the standings and other SNDA material. Read all the messages on the standings and any other material that you receive. Take it all to your next match and let your teammates see it. You might not be interested in the material, but your teammates could be and you should not make that judgment for them. Since most of the material you receive is also sent to all sponsors, make sure your sponsor posts this material in a prominent location. It could bring in a new player!

6)   KEEP THE BOARD INFORMED

The Board must be kept informed of any changes that may occur during a season, If you keep the Board informed, you will ensure that your team receives any awards they have won and they will also be aware of tournaments, banquets, playoffs, changes in leagues, etc.

The following is a list of items that you must relay to the appropriate Board member or the league -representative.
1.Adding or dropping a team member.
2.Postponement and/or rescheduling of any matches.
3.Forfeited games or matches.
4 Protested games, matches, or players.
5.Changes in email address or phone number.
6.Problems with conditions at sponsor bars.

Most of this information can be relayed with a simple phone call or mailed to the SNDA. Taking the time to relay this information can prevent problems later for you and your team.

7)   PROBLEMS/PROTESTS

Now that you’re a well-informed captain and are familiar with this booklet and the Rules for League Play, you shouldn’t have any problems, right?
While that may be true for the most part, there is still a chance that a situation will arise that cannot be resolved without some outside help. Most of the time this situation can be handled with a minimum of arguing, if you remember a few simple guidelines.

Captains should be the only ones to discuss a problem with the opposing team. Tell your teammates to come to you with any problems they have with the opposing team A sure way to get tempers going is to have an argument between several players in the middle of a match.

As a captain, you should not become involved in a lengthy argument with an opposing captain. If you are right, it will prove itself later without letting the evening completely deteriorate After all, everyone is there to have fun and play darts.
If the team captains cannot resolve a problem, the match should be continued. Just calmly inform the opposing team captain that you feel the problem could best be handled by the appropriate league rep or the Board and complete the match from that point document the circumstance of your protest, the date time and place it occurred, and fax this in with your scoresheet. Signatures of witnesses help to support the facts of the protest.
